Find Support
Living with type 1 diabetes takes perseverance. It’s been documented that people living with diabetes often feel isolated in their efforts to manage the disease. In addition, parents and loved ones can feel overwhelmed and on their own as they care for a child with type 1.
JDRF San Diego recognizes that people find support in managing their health and their family’s health through different ways. As the organization works hard to find a cure, JDRF’s goal is to provide a variety of volunteer-led programs to help people with diabetes and their families not feel alone.
There is a diabetes community. It exists in many forms. Some people participate in the community through online social networks like Juvenation and TuDiabetes. Some take part in diabetes summer camps, retreats, and special events held by health care nonprofits. The community comes together to advocate for fairness and research funding on Capitol Hill.
The JDRF San Diego community is an active, engaged group of people. They meet up for Parent Coffees and swap babysitter recommendations. They recruit friends, family and colleagues to participate in the Walk To Cure Diabetes. They mentor young people through the Diabuddies program. They Tweet about what they’re reading in diabetes research. They visit San Diego-based lawmakers to make sure our legislators are informed of issues kids with diabetes have in school. They arrive on the doorsteps of families with newly diagnosed children bringing Bags of Hope.
