JDRF San Diego

The San Diego Chapter of JDRF was founded by a group of concerned parents of children with type 1 diabetes in the mid 1980s. These parents were committed to raising funds that would go directly to type 1 diabetes research. They worked relentlessly to put together fundraising events which included Theater fundraisers, JDRF Benihana Nights, Holiday fundraising parties and of course the Walk to Cure Diabetes.

Thanks to the dedication of these volunteers, JDRF San Diego has grown in both size and scope. The chapter now supports adults with type 1 diabetes, children with type 1 diabetes and their families through a wide variety of support programs which include ACT 1 – Adults Conquering Type 1, Just for Parent Coffee groups, Family Network events and the DiaBuddies Teen group. To see a complete listing of support programs, please visit our Find Support page. In addition to the Walk to Cure Diabetes, the chapter raises much needed funds for type 1 diabetes research through The Promise Ball, The Ride to Cure Diabetes as well as multiple community events. JDRF San Diego serves all of San Diego and Imperial counties as well as the Temecula – Lake Elsinore area.

JDRF International

JDRF is a leader in setting the agenda for diabetes research worldwide, and is the largest charitable funder of and advocate for type 1 diabetes research. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal. Until a cure is found, people with type 1 diabetes have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump - each day, every day of their lives. And even with that intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its potential complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.

Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has awarded more than $1.5 billion to diabetes research. More than 80 percent of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and research-related education. JDRF has received top rankings from the American Institute of Philanthropy and other independent sources that rate charitable giving.
